WhatFormat (“we,” “us,” “our”) operates the website whatformat.com. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your choices regarding your data.

Information We Collect

Analytics Data

If you accept cookies, we use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to collect anonymised usage data including:

  • Referring website or search engine

  • Interactions with tools (e.g., which formatting features are used, templates selected)

GA4 does not collect personally identifiable information. IP addresses are anonymised by default. You can opt out by declining cookies when prompted.

Local Storage

We use your browser's local storage to save:

  • Theme preference — whether you chose light or dark mode
  • Draft messages — your current editor content, so it persists if you accidentally close the tab
  • Cookie consent choice — whether you accepted or declined analytics cookies

Local storage data stays on your device. We cannot access, read, or retrieve it from our servers. You can clear it at any time via your browser settings.

What We Do NOT Collect

We want to be explicit about what we never do:

  • We do not store your messages. Everything you type in the editor is processed locally in your browser. Your text is never sent to our servers.
  • We do not require accounts or sign-ups. We have no user database.
  • We do not sell or share data. We have no third-party data partnerships.
  • We do not track you across other websites.

Cookies

We display a cookie consent banner on your first visit. If you accept, Google Analytics 4 sets first-party cookies to measure site usage. If you decline, no analytics cookies are set and GA4 does not load.

We do not use advertising tracking cookies. If display advertising is shown on the site in the future, this policy will be updated accordingly.

Third-Party Services

  • Google Analytics 4 — anonymised usage analytics (only if you accept cookies)
  • Vercel — website hosting and CDN (processes standard web server logs)

Data Retention

Analytics data is retained according to Google Analytics' default retention settings (14 months). Local storage data persists until you clear your browser data or use the “Discard” button for saved drafts.

Children's Privacy

WhatFormat is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us so we can take appropriate action.
